Footprints has the Gold Seal of Approval, which is the highest standard. Another series of studies found that individuals who remained abstinent for less than one year relapsed two-thirds of the time. Those who remained sober for a year or more relapsed less than half the time. And those who abstained for five years remained sober and avoided relapse 85% of the time. In the United States, 60.1% of individuals ages 12 and older use at least one substance (like tobacco, alcohol, or an illicit drug), according to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The fact that residents in SLHs make improvement over time does not necessarily mean that SLHs will find acceptance in the community. In fact, one of the most frustrating issues for addiction researchers is the extent to which interventions that have been shown to be effective are not implemented in community programs. We suggest that efforts to translate research into treatment have not sufficiently appreciated how interventions are perceived and affected by various stakeholder groups (Polcin, 2006a).

Sober Facilities For Extended Stays

The cost of rent at a sober living can vary depending on the location and amenities of the sober living residence. In general, sober living homes are less expensive than traditional treatment facilities or inpatient programs. This is because sober living homes do not provide 24-hour medical care or supervision. Sober living homes typically require residents to pay rent, which generally covers the cost of food, utilities, and other expenses. Some sober living homes may also require residents to contribute to a shared household fund. Not all sober living homes accept insurance, so residents may need to pay for their stay out-of-pocket.

Each program will have a different policy when it comes to length of stay. Some will allow you to stay for as long as you’d like, as long as you’re following the rules. Prepare a policy handbook for your sober living home to set the standard for residents’ rights and responsibilities. When you open your sober living home and begin housing people in recovery, it’s best to have each resident review and sign the policy handbook upon admission and give them a copy to keep.

Over 24 agencies affiliated with CAARR offer clean and sober living services. Since sober living typically follows addiction treatment, getting a referral from the treatment provider is recommended. Other referral sources may include the criminal justice system, a mental health professional, Twelve Step meeting participants, or friends and family. Whatever the source of the referral, take a tour of the facility and talk to the people living there to decide if it’s the right fit for you. This support system allows residents to avoid the isolation that can sometimes come with returning home while in recovery. It further provides an environment to support recovery from substance abuse and addiction for those who are emerging from rehab.

Do Sober Houses Work?

When looking into sober living in your area, you have to consider a few things—such as cost, amenities, and house rules specific to each facility. Since sober living houses are in residential neighborhoods, backyards may also be available and will be part of the shared communal space. The National Sober Living Association gives owners/managers of sober living homes opportunities to network, gain nationwide exposure and participate in mentorships, training and the annual NSLA conferences. The NSLA also assists and promotes the establishment, successful management and growth of high-quality sober living homes. If you own/operate a 12 Step, abstinence-based, quality sober living home, you are eligible for membership in the National Sober Living Association.

However, recovering addicts in outpatient programs do not live at those treatment facilities and may return home at the end of each day’s scheduled sessions.
